A positive result
Congrats! You're one step closer.
If you're seeing two distinct colored lines—one control line and one test line—that's a positive result. Yay! If you're in the very early stages of pregnancy when hCG levels are still quite low, your test line might be quite faint. We recommend retesting with first-morning urine in 48 hours to confirm the positive.
Think it's a false positive?Because this test detects low levels of hCG, it's possible that this test may give positive results even if you aren't pregnant. If you test positive but don't think you're pregnant, speak with your doctor. Also, if you're going through fertility treatments, some of the medications may give you a “false positive,” so check with your doctor before taking at-home pregnancy tests.
It's also possible for the test to pick up hCG in your system after or during a pregnancy loss (this includes what's known as a “chemical pregnancy,” which occurs when a fertilized egg or embryo is unable to implant or grow very early on). If you test positive but don't think you're currently pregnant, speak with your doctor.
What to do after a positive pregnancy test?
Your next step is to call your doctor. They'll be able to confirm your pregnancy via clinical and lab findings.
Typically, you'll do a blood test to quantify the hCG levels. You might even repeat this a couple days later to make sure the hCG levels are increasing as expected.
The next milestone is an early pelvic ultrasound to assess the pregnancy development.
Your doctor can also give you more information and advice on your pregnancy and the next steps for your care.
What else you should know about the test results
As with any diagnostic test, a pregnancy confirmation should only be made by a doctor after evaluating all clinical and laboratory findings.
- If your test line looks faint, retest in 48 hours to confirm the result. Since the hCG concentration in urine doubles every two days in early pregnancy, the test line should be darker by then.
- Medical procedures and interventions that involve hCG (such as fertility medications) may cause false positives.
- You’ll want to read your test between five and 10 minutes after taking it. Beyond that window, you may see an evaporation line which isn’t the same as a positive.
- It's best to read the results at the five-minute mark, with a hard cut-off after 10 minutes. That's because after 10 minutes, you might see a grey-ish evaporation line, which doesn't indicate pregnancy.
