1 in 8 Women Have PCOS

Get Support

And it's a leading cause of infertility—but the right support can manage symptoms and improve reproductive health.

PCOS is a hormonal condition that affects how the ovaries work, with some not-so-fun symptoms.

Acne

Elevated hormones like testosterone increase oil and slow skin turnover, leading to clogged pores and acne.

Hair growth

Excessive hair growth on the face, chest, arms, and abdomen—a condition called hirsutism—affects up to 70% of those with PCOS.

Irregular cycles

Absent, skipped, or heavy periods are all signs of an irregular cycle (and potentially, PCOS), especially if you can't pinpoint ovulation.

Weight gain

Weight gain, or trouble losing weight, can be due to insulin-resistance .

Key Criteria for PCOS

A PCOS diagnosis is made when you have two of these:

Irregular periods

Longer and irregular cycles can indicate inconsistent ovulation, and the absence of cycles for months at a time could mean you're not ovulating at all.

Ovaries with an abnormally high number of antral follicles

More than 12 antral follicles (the earliest stages of egg growth) is considered a PCO (polycystic ovary), and is detected by ultrasound.

High androgens (the "male" hormones)

Hormones like testosterone, at elevated levels are linked to PCOS. This can be documented with bloodwork or clinically (with side effects like acne or thinning hair).

Manage Your PCOS Symptoms

Unfortunately, PCOS can't be cured, only managed. But the right lifestyle tweaks and supplements can make a huge difference.

  1. Adjust your diet

Choose low-glycemic carbs like leafy greens and root vegetables to minimize insulin spikes. Check out this PCOS-Friendly Quinoa Chickpea Bowl.

2. Exercise regularly

If you have insulin-resistent PCOS and a higher BMI, weight loss can help lower insulin and androgen levels. It’s been shown that losing as little as 5% body weight can bring back ovulation.

3. Prioritize quality sleep

Just one night of poor sleep can cut insulin sensitivity by 33%, so aim for 7–8 hours of uninterrupted rest—especially between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m., when sleep is most restorative.

4. Supplement with Inositol

Inositol helps your body process insulin. For those with PCOS, 4 grams of Myo-Inositol daily can help regulate ovulation after just 3 months, and the ratio of 40:1 of Myo-Inositol to D-Chiro-Inositol was most effective in restoring ovulation. Try Bird&Be's Inositol Cycle Support.

5. Try PCOS medications

Metformin, can help lower circulating insulin in cases where insulin resistance has increased HbA1C (a marker of long-term glucose management). On its own, it can take more than 6 months to re-stimulate ovulation, which is one reason why it’s best to start managing PCOS symptoms sooner rather than later.
